A round in practice

Everything in World of Yarn is yarn. You click or tap the yarn pieces that match the colour of the container, and each choice peels an object apart one layer at a time. The objects are three-dimensional, so some of the pieces you need are on the far side or underneath, and you can rotate an object to find them.

Space is limited, which is the heart of the puzzle. You cannot take every matching piece at once, so each move has to leave room for the next one. A good approach is to look for pieces that unlock others before grabbing the obvious ones.

Think of each level as a small packing problem. The container shows a colour, you take matching yarn pieces, and the object slowly comes apart in layers, so the order in which you remove things decides what is exposed next. Poki says you can rotate objects to find hidden parts, which is important because the piece you need next may not be visible from the front. The yarn look keeps the tone gentle, and there is no combat or reflex test, so the difficulty is purely about foresight.

Moves worth learning

  • Rotate every object once before you commit to a move; hidden pieces change which colour is worth taking first.
  • Prefer pieces that open up other pieces over pieces that only match the container.
  • Keep an eye on how much space is left, since the limit is what makes a move wrong.
  • If you are stuck, step back and look at the layer under the one you are working on.
  • Look for pieces that are blocking others rather than only the ones in your container's colour; clearing a blocker often matters more than matching.

Who gets on with it

Players who like calm planning puzzles, with no combat and no aiming. The click-only control makes it comfortable on a phone or with a mouse. It is well suited to quiet moments, to players who enjoy puzzles that reward patience, and to people who want something with no violence at all. Because it needs only a click or tap, it is comfortable on a phone held in one hand. It is less suited to players who want constant action or a competitive element, since Poki describes a cosy puzzle rather than a contest.

What may annoy

  • Poki shows ads between sessions.
  • Because space is limited, a poor early move can make a level impossible to finish, so you may need to restart.
  • The pace is deliberate; players who want action will find it slow.
  • Because the limited space is the main rule, a mistake early in a level can only be fixed by restarting, which may feel like lost progress. Rotating a 3D object with a finger or a mouse can be fiddly on a small screen. The calm pace is a positive for many, but anyone who finds slow puzzles dull may give up quickly. Poki shows ads between sessions here too.
